HKP Lead Screws Support Health & Mobility Applications Via Wearable Exoskeletons

Exoskeleton

Robotic exoskeletons that were first seen in science-fiction movies are now starting to appear in a variety of industrial and medical applications.

Exoskeletons are wearable machines that enhance the abilities of the people who wear them. Exoskeletons make people stronger, and they reduce the risk of injury. They’re particularly useful in reducing fatigue for repetitive tasks, as some exoskeleton systems can reduce worker exertion by as much as 80 percent.

Exoskeleton technology is becoming widely used in industries such as agriculture, manufacturing/assembly, construction and warehouse logistics. When it comes to healthcare, exoskeletons are starting to enable people in wheelchairs to stand up and walk.

Most robotic exoskeletons involve sensors, control systems, mechanical structures, execution modules, actuators and powerful lead screws. The integrated systems are capable of acquiring information and executing motor functions.  HKP’s technology is used in the execution module of an exoskeleton, to provide the actuation that delivers the mechanical power.

Application Challenges:

  • Size
  • Accuracy
  • Fast response
  • Reliability

Exoskeleton - Lead Screw Application

HK Lead Screw Assemblies:

HK lead screw assemblies are used in various exoskeleton applications. Kerk Lead Screw Assemblies are modified Acme thread forms that are optimized for performance. They are available in a broad range of lead screw sizes and nut types, and they can develop thrusts up to 500 lbs with positional accuracies to .0001-in/in.

Kerk lead screws are self-adjusting, maintenance-free and require no lubrication. Providing maximum accuracy, high reliability, smooth, quiet operation and low cost.

Screw Accuracy: Haydon Kerk uses a unique precision rolling process for screw manufacturing. Standard lead accuracy for Kerk screws is .0006 in./in. (mm/mm), and lead accuracies are available up to .0001 in./in. (mm/mm).

End Machining – providing a tailored fit: Haydon Kerk can custom machine screws to your specifications or provide cut-to-length screws for your own machining. Lengths can be specified up to 12 ft. (4M) from stock, (depending on diameter and lead). Cut to length screws are offered in 6-in increments (6-in, 12, 18, etc.) +1.0-in/-0-in.

Durability: HKP nut materials provide long wear-life over a wide variety of conditions. Special materials are available to support very high loads and/or high speeds.

Exoskeleton technology is advancing quickly. Initial perceptions of bulky armor-like suits from science fiction films are evolving. Today, researchers are developing soft, wearable exoskeletons that mimic muscle movements. Each design evolution brings the potential for wider application, in a broader set of industries.
