Strapping tools are used to apply, tighten, seal and cut plastic bands around a package or pallet, in order to secure and bundle items. They’re commonly used in packaging, shipping and storage industries, where securing heavy or bulky loads is crucial.
Here is an overview of how plastic strapping tools work:
In powered tools, an electric motor is used to pull the strap automatically and achieve consistent tension. Some tools use heat to weld the two ends of the plastic strap together. The tool generates heat at the joint of the strap, which melts the plastic and fuses it, creating a strong bond. Once the strap is tightened and sealed, the tool has a built-in cutter that trims the excess strap.
There are four stages where HKP motors are used:
- Loading: HKP motors drive the straps from the storage device
-
Fraping/Securing: when the band around the package or bundle is in place, the motor tightens and holds the band firmly.
-
Cutting & bonding: once the banding reaches the required tightness, a cutting device will cut the straps.
-
Resetting: after the packaging is bundled, the components of the tool are reset for the next banding operation.
- Footprint: small, short and lightweight motors are important, as these strapping tools are hand-held and portable.
- Power: peak torque is required during the fraping process.
- Strong acceleration is required in the loading process.
- Communication: sensors provide feedback to ensure smooth commutation and to reduce vibration and noise.
- Long life: strapping tools typically use motors that can operate for more than 10,000 hours.
