Lead Screw Assemblies Used in High-Precision Image Measuring Instruments

Image Measuring

High-precision image measuring instruments enable manufacturers to ensure the quality, accuracy and consistency of their products. These instruments utilize optical imaging technology, digital cameras and sophisticated software algorithms to capture and analyze images of objects with precise levels of accuracy.

Optical Coordinate Measuring Machines typically feature the following:

  1. Image Capture Cameras: high-quality digital cameras capture images of the object from various angles and orientations.
  2. Image Processing Software: sophisticated algorithms enhance image clarity and correct distortions. This step ensures that images are suitable for measurement & analysis.
  3. Feature Extraction: algorithms identify edges, corners, surfaces and other geometric elements of the object.
  4. Dimensional Measurement: high-precision algorithms measure pixel coordinates to calculate dimensions, distances and angles of the object.
  5. Comparison & Analysis: measured dimensions are compared to target dimensions identified in manufacturing specifications. Deviations from nominal dimensions are identified and analyzed.
  6. Reporting & Documentation: measured results are compiled into reports for quality control and process optimization.

Image measuring instruments are non-contact instruments. The cameras used to capture an image must be moved in a precise manner, to facilitate measurement without damaging the object.

Application Challenges:

  • Quite operation

  • Accuracy

  • Anti-backlash capabilities to hold objects in place.

Preferred Motion Solutions:

An XY Stage to Move the Object to be Measured –
Driven by HKP WDG Anti-Backlash Nut & Lead Screw Assembly:

The HKP WDG Series anti-backlash acme lead screw assembly utilizes a compact design to provide stiffness and balanced accuracy for precise positioning. The patented wedge design locks the anti-backlash nut at the correct preload without excessive drag. Shorter than other self-compensating nuts, the WDG nut permits the design of smaller assemblies without sacrificing stroke length. Nut wear or momentary overload is accommodated through the WDG Series’ compensation mechanism, which maintains positional accuracy in demanding applications. The standard WDG Series assembly utilizes a self-lubricating acetal nut, axially preloaded, on a 303 stainless steel acme lead screw. This assembly is machined to customer specifications to accommodate any configuration or environment.

Driven by an HKP BFW Nut & Lead Screw Assembly:

The HKP BFW Series general purpose “free-wheeling” nut is for applications that do not require anti-backlash and wear compensation. It provides effective power transmission at minimum cost, and features long life and self-lubricating polyacetal Acme lead screw nuts. Kerkite Composite Polymers are also available as standard options. The secure mounting and convenience of a circular flange is standard on the BFW nuts with triangular flange and thread mounting as an option. Many custom configurations are available and assemblies can be supplied cut-to-length or with ends machined to customer requirements.
