Delayed Egress Security Locks
Safety plays an important role in architecture. Retail outlets, restaurants, entertainment venues, offices and businesses of all types have emergency exits with automated exit doors. A Delayed Egress Lock is a modified magnetic lock that includes a countdown timer, an exit sense device, a local alarm and often times, they are connect to a fire alarm system. The egress system is designed to delay exit for a predetermined time, providing a deterrent to occupants using the door unless there is a true need, but still facilitating full egress use after the delay period.
HKP hybrid actuators and can-stack linear actuators are widely used to provide the motion solutions used in delayed egress locking systems.
Application Challenges:
-
Noise reduction
-
Reducing motor power draw in the event of loss of building power
-
Reducing mechanical footprint and heat generation
-
End products require panic and fire ratings (UL 305 & 10C)
-
Environmental and vibration requirements
-
No external interference allowed
-
Compact size (50x50mm for crash bars, 20x20mm for smaller latches)
Multiple Motion Solutions are used for these applications, including:
HKP’s line of hybrid stepper motor linear actuators delivers high performance and exceptional endurance in a very small package. These high-performance hybrid actuators directly drive a rotor drive nut on a stainless steel precision acme lead screw. This patented interface reduces tolerances and noise while increasing efficiency and durability.
HKP offers a full range of can-stack linear actuators from 15 to 37 mm in size with a wide range of force outputs. Actuators for these applications are available in non-captive and external configurations. All stepper motor linear actuators can be customized for application specific needs.
Features:
- Non-captive and external linear configurations
- Linear Step Accuracy ranging from 3 – 400 microns
- Dual ball bearings for greater precision and durability
- Black Ice coated lead screws are available
- Custom nuts and configurations are available.
Additional options include Non-Captive Linear Actuators and External Linear Actuators.

Delayed egress locks bring peace of mind to emergency situations where safety is paramount. They’re also becoming commonplace in other applications, such as:
- Healthcare facilities – where they can alert staff to a patient attempting to leave the premises.
- Schools and childcare – a delayed egress system helps to deter abductions, or unauthorized departures.
- Retail shops – where the delay and alarm can alert staff and discourage shoplifting.
- Airports – doors leading to flight line areas are secured with delayed egress to discourage unauthorized access.
As more and more businesses incorporate delayed egress systems, HKP will be there to provide actuators and high-performance motion solutions that are tailored to each application’s specific need.
